DownStairs Brewing Founder's Story
Some businesses start with a business plan. Others start with a spreadsheet.
Downstairs Brewing started with a couple of fermenters in a basement during lockdown. Like a lot of small brands, they had a great story… they just weren’t telling it.
The situation
The craft beer space is crowded. Good beer alone isn’t enough to stand out anymore. Downstairs had personality, history, and heart. But none of it was clearly expressed. No simple narrative. No anchor point for the brand. Just a loose collection of posts and word-of-mouth. They didn’t need a marketing campaign. They needed their story teased out and shaped.
The approach
We treated this less like a “video shoot” and more like a conversation.
Start with the human stuff:
Why did this start?
What makes it different?
What do people actually feel when they’re here?
From there, we:
developed the script and narrative arc
conducted interviews
filmed and edited a short founder-style story piece
shaped tone and messaging to feel honest, not polished
kept production intentionally scrappy to match the brand
Nothing glossy. Nothing corporate. Just real. Because that’s what the brewery actually is.
The story we uncovered
A pandemic hobby that accidentally became a business. Brewing downstairs with too much time and not enough certainty.
Friends experimenting, posting online, building a small community. A dog watching every batch from the top of the stairs.
It wasn’t a growth strategy. It was a human story. And that’s exactly what made it work.
The result
The finished piece became the hero story for the website and a simple way to introduce the brand to new customers.
Something they could point to and say: “This is who we are.” Sometimes clarity is the outcome.
Not bigger.
Not louder.
Just more them.
